Celebrate You!!

Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken in 1990, by the Voyager 1 space probe from 3 ½ billion miles away and it is the photo that accompanies this blog.

In the photograph, Earth is a tiny dot against the vastness of space, nestled among bands of sunlight reflected by the camera. Carl Sagen convinced NASA to take one last photo before Voyager left our solar system and this inspirational picture represents humanity’s minuscule and ephemeral place amidst the cosmos.

I invite you to spend some time with this photo. We have such grandiose ideas of what we are and yet our planet is smaller than a grain of sand when compared to the cosmos.

This can be a bit overwhelming when you realize that not only our planet but also you are a mere blip in time, arising out of the vast 4 ½ billion years of creativity on this planet. And yet in the whole universe there has never been another you nor will there ever be! You are an absolutely unique expression of life.

You are also necessary, for life gave you life for a purpose. You may not yet know what that is, but to know it starts with the understanding that you are a part of a vast and creative universe, and it may look as if you are as inconsequential as one grain of sand on a beach but your life matters!!

Don’t try to search for your purpose. Be willing to simply ask life, “How can I serve?” and then let that question go so it can work its magic from underneath your everyday awareness. And purpose isn’t as grandiose as most people think. As Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

What happens when you let in the truth that you are absolutely unique and totally necessary? You stop taking yourself for granted, you stop taking anything for granted. You open again to the preciousness of each moment, of each breath!

And this is not selfish. It is self-full and it can transform our world. Here is an analogy that speaks directly to this. Come and sit on the moon with me and see the Earth before you in all her glory. Then see there are 7 ½ billion people on this planet sleeping, walking, working, driving, flying, swimming, and hiking. And yet most of them have clouds around their head. They’re completely lost in their minds and because of that, they can do harm to themselves, to others, and to the planet.

Now see where you are on this planet and as you let in your own unique beauty, see the clouds around your head lifting so that you know more and more moments of being fully here for life. And then as you engage with somebody else who has clouds around their head, see their clouds lift.

See, from this one exchange with another person, a ripple effect begins to move across our planet, lifting the clouds of more and more people so they can see the sacredness of every rock, insect, drop of water, animal, and person. That is how our world will be healed one person at a time.

So for the sake of all the children who are coming after us, I ask you to find the courage to claim the truth that you are an essential and unique part of this grand unfolding that is life.
