Have You Been Kind to You Today?

Have you been kind to you today? The chances are you have not. We all live in a mind that is so used to seeing ourselves through the lens that we need to be different than what we are to be okay, that being kind with ourselves often takes a back seat.

But the amazing thing is, you have, in this never to be repeated moment in time, been given the gift of life because life needed to express itself as you. And there is nothing wrong with you. You are a perfect mixture of dark and light. In other words, you are perfectly imperfect!

Also, you are a completely unique and totally necessary expression of life, lovable and loved exactly as you are. You will be a work in progress until your last breath, a mix of strengths and vulnerabilities, and trying to fix yourself is an endless game of struggle. You are enough!

I know, there’s a voice inside of you that may be disagreeing with what I am saying. But I’m here to tell you that voice, which I’m calling the inner critic, doesn’t know shit! I took on that voice to the depth that it almost killed me. It was my god. I totally bought its story hook line and sinker.

But slowly, as I learned how to quiet my mind and open my heart, I saw through its story that had been with me since I was very young. Not only could I see but I could touch it with compassion because I saw it didn’t know the way back home to my heart. As I was able to touch it with my heart it calmed down.

If this calls to you I want to share with you one of my all-time favorite stories that came during the time when I was learning how to not believe my inner critic. I discovered it in, Benjamin Hoff’s book, The Te of Piglet:

A Hindu, a Rabbi, and a Critic were traveling separately through the countryside late one afternoon when they were all three caught in a terrific thunderstorm. They sought shelter at a nearby farmhouse.

“That storm will be raging for hours.” The farmer told them. “You ought to spend the night. The problem is there is only room for two in the house. One of you must sleep in the barn.” “I’ll be the one,” said the Hindu, “a little hardship is nothing to me.” And he went to the barn.

A few minutes later there was a knock at the door. It was the Hindu. “I’m sorry,” he said to the others, but there is a cow in the barn. Cows are sacred creatures, and I cannot impose.”

“Don’t worry said the Rabbi, make yourself comfortable. I will go sleep in the barn”

A few minutes later there was another knock at the door. It was the Rabbi. “I hate to be a bother,” he said, “but there is a pig in the barn. In my religion pigs are unclean, I wouldn’t feel comfortable sleeping near a pig.”

“Oh, all right,” said the Critic, “I’ll go sleep in the barn.”

A few minutes later there was a knock at the door. It was the pig and the cow!

May this humor give you a little space from the critic inside of you that thinks it is speaking the truth. And may you discover how to fall in love with you exactly as you are. That is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself, to your friends and loved ones, and to the Earth. For when you live from your heart, you become a healing presence in the world.

If you want to know more about not believing your inner critic, you can download and read Disarming the Judger from my book, Belonging to Life.
