Problems or Invitations?

There are so many problems in the world right now. Problems inside of us, problems in our families, problems in our communities, problems in our countries, problems with the Earth, and problems all over the world.
It’s enough to drive anybody crazy! But maybe, just maybe our problems can empower us rather than keeping us caught in struggle.
At one time my whole life was a problem! People tried to fix me by sending me to a child psychiatrist, psychologists, group therapy, and mental hospitals. It only made things worse.
In my late 20s I began to wake up out of the world of struggle, out of being a victim of my own life. Slowly I began to hear the truth that the doorway out of the world of struggle is embedded in the problems I was experiencing. I would hear this and then go right back into struggling with my problems.
In the middle of waking up out of being a victim to my life, I read a letter that Yogananda wrote to a man who was dealing with illness. Basically, what he said was that God was testing this person through his illness. I tried living that for a while, but it fed my judging mind saying, “I am caught in these problems because I am not doing life right enough.” This caused a tightness inside of me because when you are tested you could do it right or you could do it wrong.
Slowly my curiosity brought more space around my struggling mind. It began to seep into my awareness that just like life brings spring forth out of winter, keeps our hearts beating as they do, and keeps the planets dancing with one another in mathematical precision, that the challenging parts of my life were tailor-made to help me see where I still identified with the world of struggle.
As I began to relax into the living process of my life, the word problems turned into the word invitations. That is why I like Eckardt Tolle’s quote:
“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.”
What does it mean to be a conscious human being? It means that your attention is no longer completely seduced by the problem mode of your mind so you can be here for life, resting in its flow, recognizing that even though your life may be challenging, it is all for you, bringing you step-by-step out of struggle mode and into engaging with the amazing adventure that is your life.
Now, my main invitation is cancer, and I oftentimes wake up in the morning with my mind grumbling about not feeling well. I then meditate, quieting my mind and opening my heart and the agony of resisting my illness turns into deep trust and a willingness to keep on opening to what life is offering me. And the wisdom that comes is life changing.
So, I invite you to see how much your mind turns life into problems. No need to judge it, that’s just what minds do. But even with the political unrest all over the world, know it is possible to not get seduced into the world of problems, especially fear and judgment, so that you can re-member the joy of being fully awake to life, becoming a healing presence in the world.
