The Most Amazing Things About You and Your Life, Part A
To be a human being, to be given the gift of life and living on this magical planet, is miraculous, and yet most of us sleepwalk through our lives, completely unaware of the depth and the breadth of who we really are and what is really going on here!
I want to offer you some doorways that will invite you into an awe-inspiring connection with yourself and your life, without requiring you to be any different than you are, or for your life to be any different either. What I am sharing with you are the nuggets of wisdom and inspiration that life has shown me along the way. They are not only true about me, but true about you and every other being on this planet.
The first doorway is the reality that you are an absolutely unique expression of life. It is said that since human beings appeared on this planet, approximately 110 billion of us have been born, lived, and died. And in those billions of people, there has never been anyone remotely like you! And there never will be. In this never-to-be-repeated moment in time, you have been given the gift of life because life needed to express itself as you.
The Buddha says that to be given the gift of life is as rare as if there were only one turtle that swam in the seven seas of the Earth, and only one golden hoop that floats on those seas. And only once every 100 years does the turtle surface, and it surfaces through the golden hoop. You have been given this rare and exquisite gift: the gift of life.
It took all the creativity that has occurred over the 4.5 billion years our planet has been in existence to create you. At one time, you were no feet on this planet. So, the river of creativity that is life tried out fins, paws, and hooves, finally culminating in the amazing creation called your feet, which allows you to move around and explore the world. At one time, there were no eyes. It is said that the first forerunners of eyes were cells in polyps anchored on the ocean floor that could begin to differentiate between light and dark. And if we had time in this blog, we could go through all the iterations of eyes that unfolded on our planet, until all that creativity led to the eyes that allow you to see. Take a moment, look around you, and feel deep gratitude for your eyes.
So, everything that makes up your body has undergone multiple layers of evolution. Again, you are the sum total of the 4.5 billion years of creativity that have occurred on this amazing planet.
Additionally, you appeared on the most exquisite planet we have been able to find. Our Earth is a truly creative and magical place. We have searched inside our solar system and outside of it with the Hubble and now the new James Webb telescope, and we have not found anything even remotely like our planet. And in this sea of creativity, it takes just a little bit of earth, a little bit of sun, a little bit of water, and some air to create orchids, aardvarks, crystals, baby dolphins, majestic icebergs, and a mind-boggling variety of birds, some that are so colorful they put the fashion world to shame.
You live in paradise, but most of us sleepwalk through our lives, rarely allowing our feet to touch the earth and even more rarely opening enough to be touched by all that surrounds us. With just a little shift in perception, you can see how magical the Earth is. Look at Mars, mile after mile of red brown rocks and sand, and look at Venus, a cauldron of fire and fury. Yes, we found ice crystals on Mars and some of Jupiter’s moons, which was a big deal to us. But when was the last time you sat quietly in the presence of moving water, whether it was a cascading waterfall, or lifting your face to the rain falling from the sky, or being blown away by wild ocean waves? We have not found any moving water in all our explorations, except on Earth.
Imagine spending time on Mars and then think of what it would be like to simply walk through a forest on our planet, filled with bird songs, an astounding variety of plants, fungi, dancing water, and rocks. And all of it is working together to create harmony of the whole forest. When was the last time you sat with a tree and allowed it to reveal its unique beauty, recognizing its intelligence and its essence?
Because life was able to flourish on our planet, you are the Earth animated. Your bones are made from particles that were once part of mountains. Your cells are surrounded and penetrated by the ocean. The breath that moves through you moves through mighty cedar trees and baby pandas. To connect with the Earth is to remember that you are a part of this magical, mysterious, and awesomely creative process that is life. To communicate with the Earth, to listen to her and let her in, is to be invited to live from the awareness of the sacredness of all.
