Should we thank Donald Trump?

If you’re like me, hearing about another thing Trump is doing often brings up fear and judgment. But I know that when I meet him with the same kind of mind he lives in, that doesn’t heal anything.

So, I’m doing my best to meet him with the wisdom of my heart rather than the reactions of my mind. How can I possibly do that when he is causing so much chaos in the world? I do it by seeing that he is the representative of the old kind of way human beings have been with one another. Power over!

There have been tens of thousands of wars on our planet, with around 100 armed conflicts happening as you are reading this. Down through the eons, there have been human beings who dominated other human beings because of their skin color, their religion, their gender, or their sexuality. But we can no longer afford to relate to each other in this way. It is time for humanity to grow up.

So, what Trump is showing us is the devastation that comes from thinking that power over will heal anything. Whether it is what is happening in Minneapolis with the ICE agents, the overthrow of the Venezuelan President, the insane idea of taking over Greenland, or how he has been speaking in the last few weeks, which has alienated most of our allies, he does not understand that, in the long run, power over only breeds more chaos. Think of the failure of the war on drugs in the 80’s (we are an even more drug addicted society now) or Vietnam.

But his role in the world is essential right now for us to evolve into maturity! What do I mean by that? Let’s go back to the butterfly story, a powerful and healing way to view what’s happening right now on our planet. The butterfly begins as a caterpillar, which has a very limited view of life, living mainly on a few trees throughout its life. And while they have their purpose, they also destroy, debilitate, and even kill trees by destroying their leaves.

But when the caterpillar goes into a cocoon, it turns into goo, and out of that goo begins to become the first wave of what biologists call imaginal cells, the forerunners of the butterfly. The important thing to see is that the imaginal cells need the goo! It is their incubator! The goo also does something that, at first glance, looks very destructive but is actually essential: it kills the first wave of imaginal cells. This causes the imaginal cells to come together in a community, and the urge for the new becomes stronger than the old as the butterfly is created.

The butterfly is completely different than the caterpillar. It doesn’t just take, it gives by pollinating and bringing beauty and magic to the world. And their view of life is much broader than the caterpillar’s. Monarch butterflies can fly from Canada to Mexico, so they have a much broader perspective of the world.

Humanity is now maturing from a caterpillar’s view of the world to a butterfly’s.

We are in the midst of a major evolutionary shift, and it is happening in human consciousness. We are being moved from the me kind of consciousness that has dominated the world into a we kind of consciousness that understands we are all in this together and we are all kin.

Can we trust the chaos of our time? Yes. We don’t have to like it, but we can see that birth is always messy.  When you step back and look at life evolving on this planet and really study it, you will see that in every great shift of evolution, as the old way is dying, a new one is being born, the old kicks up a fuss.

Donald Trump is the goo, perfect representative of the old, which is waking up the butterfly inside of us. You are reading this because you are an imaginal cell of the new that is asking to be born. Be willing to meet all authoritarian power with the wisdom of your heart rather than fear and judgment of your mind, and in those moments, you become the healing that is coming out of this time of chaos.

Is this easy? No. I still get caught in fear and judgment, but I then remember that life knows what it is doing and that Trump is the goo out of which the we kind of consciousness is being born.
