Crazy Time. Healing Time

What a wild and crazy time we are living in. If you look at the news, it looks like everything is breaking down and will never come together again. Yes, this is a breakdown time in the sense that an old way of being with ourselves, with each other, and the planet is dying. And it is also a time of breakthrough, a time when the clouds of struggle in our minds can lift, and we can see what’s really going on here. What do I mean by that?

Come sit on the moon with me, and there before you is our jewel of a planet, our home, floating through vast oceans of space. Just like you were once no more than 2 feet tall and have gone through many shifts in your evolution, so too has the Earth. At one time, this blue-green Jewel right before you was only gas and dust.

Slowly over the eons, it created water, fish, land, plants, amphibians, and mammals, all leading to the planet you live on now. And in every one of those evolutionary shifts, as an old way of life was dying and a new way being born, the old way put up a fuss. But repeatedly, the urge for life to express itself in new ways was stronger than the urge of the old to hold on.

What is the old that is trying to hold on for dear life right now? It’s the way human beings have related to themselves, each other, the planet, and all the life forms that have come from this great sea of creativity. This old way is power over, and while it may create immediate results like losing a lot of weight by going on an extreme diet, or ICE agents slowing the flow of immigrants into our country, it never, ever really heals anything in the long run.

Why is that? Because what you try to control controls you, whether it’s trying to make you and your loved ones different than what they are, or whether it’s trying to control another country, and in the long run, it doesn’t heal anything.

What is the evidence of that? The US Surgeon General reports that 98% of every pound we try to get rid of in this country comes back, plus some, within a year and a half. Netanyahu thought that if he just bombed Gaza to smithereens, he would then eliminate Hamas. And yet he only created many more Hamas warriors. Trump believed he would go into Iran and subdue it in a few weeks. And yet he has woken up a deep hatred for the US, which is permeating many young men in the Middle East.

Out of this time of chaos, there is an awakening in humanity to a new way of dealing with each other and life’s challenges. It’s called listening, it’s called understanding that we are all in this together, living on a tiny planet, and whether we have a different skin color, or a different religion, or a different sexuality, or a different political view, we are one family, and there is so much more that we have in common than our differences.

This kind of listening begins with us. We all carry a lot of pain, and yet we rarely listen to it. We have been conditioned to fix it, get rid of it, change it, or blame someone, and all the while, our pain is asking to be heard. Or, as it says in the Course in Miracles, “Everything is love or a request for love.”

When listening to what you are experiencing becomes your primary way of responding to all the levels of pain in your life, you begin to listen to life. This kind of listening happens when you cultivate the ability to quiet your mind and open your heart so you can actually be present for life, letting in the sound of the birds, the wind caressing your cheek, and the wonderful smells of the Earth.

The more you relax into the flow of your life, you know, no matter how challenging it is, it is giving you, as Eckardt totally so beautifully says, “The exact set of experiences in order to become a conscious human being,” you begin to be able to hear and be guided by the infinite wisdom at the heart of life.

What does he mean about being a conscious human being? It means being here for life, using your mind for the wonderful tool it is, but not experiencing life exclusively through your thoughts. It means really and truly experiencing life as it is. And the more you do this, you become a healing presence in the world, for there is no ‘other’. There is only kin.

But we all have a voice in our heads that drowns out the wisdom of intelligence at the heart of life that is always with us. That voice, the me, me, me, is like a cloud bank that covers over the sun. And that sun represents the radiant, alive, flowing energy that we really are. Just like the sun never goes away, even though it is night or there is a stormy day, the truth of who we really are, the love at the heart of life, has never gone away. We just don’t see it because we have been trained to pay attention to the struggles of our mind.

But now the struggles are getting so big, becoming superfood for our fear-based mind, it is inviting more and more of us to be the awareness that observes our struggles with great compassion, rather than buying into their stories.

Because you are reading this, you are waking up out of the dream of struggle and back into an intimate, alive, trust-filled connection with life. To help clarify this, sit on the moon again and see your beautiful home floating before you. Rewind the view of the earth to its very beginning and see it as completely dark, so dark you can barely see its outline against the velvety black of space.

Now, see about 3000 years ago, a light turned on in the far east as Buddha saw what we are ready to see collectively – that we are not this struggling self. Then, a little over 2000 years ago, another light turned on: a being called Jesus, who saw that love is not only at the core of absolutely everything, but also it is the loving, grateful, compassionate heart that heals.

Now, imagine that over the last 2000 years, more and more human beings have woken up from the dream of struggle, and see them as radiant lights scattered across our planet. Now see these lights begin to connect with one another, so that, slowly and surely, the darkness on our planet begins to lighten. Yes, there are still big pockets of darkness, but those pockets are surrounded by twinkling lights, people who are re-membering who they really are.

Even if only once a day, you meet yourself with kindness and compassion; even if only every few days, you open enough to actually experience this living moment of your life rather than thinking about it; even if only once a week, you see this breakdown time as a breakthrough time, those moments add to the awakening that is happening on our planet. It happens one person at a time, just as the oceans were created one drop at a time.

Even though the fear-based mind may take right back over again, that is okay. You are a part of this web of light that is healing our planet, and every moment of awakening counts!

As Teilhard de Chardin, French philosopher and Jesuit priest, said,

“…if the truth appears once, in one single mind, that is enough to ensure that nothing can ever prevent it from spreading to everything and setting it ablaze.”
