My Bathroom Window
Devrah, my partner in this business, had an experience she wanted to share with you all:
We’ve had some really hot days this summer and have a large portable AC unit that we have used in our living room before. This summer, my husband wanted to try it in our bathroom, hoping we could get cooler air into the living room AND our bedroom. It didn’t work that great, but it did provide some relief. To use this unit, you need a window to vent, which means blocking off a window and lifting it onto the bathroom counter. Think large!
Cue Northwest weather, and we went into a very nice fall-ish patch. Because the AC unit is heavy and a pain to set up, we left it sitting on the counter, blocking my window to my favorite tree and relocating my big Buddha statue. It was like this for many weeks.
One day, I said to my husband, “I miss my window, I miss my tree, I miss Buddha statue.”
A couple of days later, I walked into the bathroom, and the counter was empty, and my window was free of obstruction. Immediately, I said through the window, “Hi,” to Suki, my favorite Japanese Maple. I became fascinated by the shift, not just in the space, but in me. I breathed out a deep breath and instantly became more relaxed. I moved Buddha back into his corner of the counter and was so grateful and appreciative to have my space back.
Suki is my barometer for the weather and the seasons. She is forever changing through the days and months. Right now, her top leaves are reddening. Is she getting ready for fall already? Is she longing, like me, for cooler days?
Now every time I walk into the bathroom to wash my hands, water our plants, or take a shower, I feel gratitude for the space, for my window, for my Buddha, and it just melds into the rest of my day. It slows me down, invites me to deepen my breath, connect with the present moment, and nature just outside my window.
It amazes me that a simple change can make such a difference in how I feel.
