Having Your Heart Torn Open

I just read a wonderful book called Chosen by a Horse. It is the story of Susan Richards who lost her mother at age 5 and went on a long journey into her own darkness. She then adopted a trotting horse called Lay Me Down who had been deeply abused and yet had such an open heart.

Their relationship was healing for both of them, but the biggest healing came for Susan when Lay Me Down became ill and subsequently died. Lay Me Down’s best friend, a gelding called Hotshot, was able to open fully to his own grief and thus invited Susan to finally open to hers. The pages towards the end of the book which describe their grief are pure magic, inviting us all into what Stephen Levine says, “May you be so blessed to have your heart torn wide open.”

Be light,
Mary
